Mediterranean Series 14" Smoothtop Electric Cooktop with 2 Quick-to-Heat Burners Analog Controls and Textured Black Glass: 120 I ordered this product to replace the original alcohol/electric stove on my 34 ft. cabin cruiser. The product arrived in a timely manner however it did not work. I installed the cooktop according to the enclosed instructions. When I turned on the cooktop, the circut breaker in the galley tripped as well as the one on the dock. I opened the back of the cooktop and found that the white (neutral) wire was not connected to the switch but rather was touching the frame. I was able to crimp the slide on terminal and reattach it. Reassembled the unit and reinstalled it in the counter top. Turned it on and the breakers tripped again. I completely removed the cooktop and took the entire back panel off. I found that the black (hot) wire had never been connected to the large heating element but was stuck under the whie terminal wire and was directly touching the grounded cooktop frame (making a DIRECT short). I "dug" the wire out and connected it to the hot terminal of the large burner. I still have to reassemble the cooktop. I had to take a break but will be back on the boat this weekend to reinstall the cooktop for the third time. I hope it finally works. I am a retired electrical engineer with a lot of practical mechcanical expertise. I am astounded that a $426 cooktop should arrive with such obvious flaws and would have to be shipped back if it were received by a less qualified customer. Be prepared to ship it back to get it working! I hope it works better under actual use than it did "out of the box". On the positive side, it is a very attractive unit and when it is on, the burner heats up quickly(The small burner turned on with no problem. The large burner had all the bad "non-connections"). Physical installation was rather simple since I just had to enlarge the existing hole in the counter and install the two enclosed mounting brackets. Rather than put a bead of silicon around it, I chose to put 1/8 inch silicon weather stripping around the edge of the opening to even out any uneven spots. (easier to get the unit back out).
Post installation update: February 9, 2013- we used the stove several times at the end of last boating season and my wife is very pleased with it! It heats up quickly and does a great job. Very even heat and good control. I would give it five stars if it didn't have the problems at the outset. Afterall, what good is it if it doesn't work right out of the box!.
